E3 News – Nintendo – Wii U

So in 2012 Nintendo will be launching the follow on from the Wii and it will be called the “Wii U“. Nintendo claim it will offer a “deeper gaming experience” and that with the Wii U there is “something for everyone”.

Nintendo plan for the Wii U to compete with the Xbox 360 & PS3 when it comes to gaming power but to be more flexible in how it’s used. For example, the controllers contain a 6.2inch touchscreen so you don’t have to have it hooked up to the TV to be able to play. When you do connect to the TV the Wii U’s 1080p HD output over HDMI should be a big improvement on the Wii. It will also be compatible with S-video and composite cables.

So what else does it come with? There is internal memory but to what size is still unknown. This can be increased by connecting an external USB HDD or using the SD card slot provided. There will be four USB 2.0 ports and the game will once again be delivered on disc. As usual Nintendo will have their own proprietary high-density optical disc like we’ve seen for previous consoles. Even though this will be a HD drive and these discs will probably be some form of Blu-Ray disc, the Wii U will still play your original Wii games.
